Apple Grown in Wind Tunnel is about the activities of an underground network of people suffering from illness who, confronted by dwindling natural resources and the failure of the US healthcare system, are searching for alternative methods of treatment. Filmed around the artist’s home at the time, Saint Paul, Minnesota, the video imagines a culture at the margins of post-industrial society that is being held together by pirate radio, toxic waste dumps, motorways and, above all, the overwhelming desire to be healed. “I’m often asked if the world that I show is science fiction, a future that possibly awaits us soon. All I can say to that is maybe it has all happened.” (Steven Matheson)
