Following our first announcement last month, we are pleased to unveil the highlights of the one-month program of ever elusive – thirty years of transmediale. From 2 February until 5 March 2017, various events will be presented across the city of Berlin. With transmediale 2017, Haus der Kulturen der Welt re-opens its doors after a period of extensive renovation.

transmediale is funded as a cultural institution of excellence by Kulturstiftung des Bundes since 2004. The foundation recently decided to continue supporting transmediale through 2022, increasing their funding to 550.000 euros per year.
Throughout the run of the festival, excursions, and closing weekend, around 180 international thinkers and cultural producers will reframe the question of the role of media today in the special exhibition "alien matter", as well as through panels, performances, workshops and screenings. The central question to be addressed: In a world where technology increasingly operates independently of humans, where does the power to act and mediate lie?

Festival
On the first day of the three-day festival at Haus der Kulturen der Welt (3–5 February 2017), transmediale and CTM – Festival for Adventurous Music and Art will feature Lexachast. The audiovisual performance will be presented by the futuristic sound design duo Amnesia Scanner and PAN label founder Bill Kouligas. Their dystopian soundtrack revolves around artist Harm van den Dorpel’s generative, live-streaming visuals, based on algorithms filtering random Not Safe for Work (NSFW) content from across the widest reaches of the Internet. These visuals appear as potentially provocative surprises—even to the performers, referencing our culpability and vulnerability with a view upon the Internet’s overkill of material.
Digital technology has become part of the general infrastructure of society, and increasingly takes on active roles in our environment on its own. This poses a challenge for how we think about infrastructure as well as anthropocentric perspectives about the role and impact of technology. In the keynote conversation Becoming Infrastructural – Becoming Environmental, media scholar Lisa Parks and philosopher, media and culture theorist Erich Hörl explore the challenges and limitations of this new infrastructural and environmental turn.
Another highlight is the artistic documentary The Sprawl (Propaganda About Propaganda) (2016) by the Dutch design and research studio Metahaven, screened on the second festival day. The film argues that the Internet has become a disruptive, geopolitical super weapon: Who benefits from Social Media? Does image manipulation software express an ideology? Is the Internet facilitating aesthetic terrorism? With restless futurist beats by Kuedo, The Sprawl is a paranoid digital trip in which form and content continually influence each other.

The keynote conversation Immediate & Habitual: The Elusiveness of Mediation between New Media Studies scholars Wendy Hui Kyong Chun and Richard Grusin raises questions about what ties different actors together in ever-expanding media environments. Human and nonhuman actors, users and machines, bodies and media objects—the blurry boundaries between man and machine point towards futures of ongoing yet mostly unnoticeable transformations.
In the keynote conversation Strange Ecologies: From Necropolitics to Reproductive Revolutions, artist Steve Kurtz, co-founder of the artist collective Critical Art Ensemble (CAE), together with performance artist Johannes Paul Raether explore the power mechanisms and politics behind our environmental and evolutionary thinking, examining the contradictions and questions they raise. Additionally, they will focus on the less visible, or even unacknowledged territories associated with the politics of death and reproduction in the so-called Capitalocene.

Closing Weekend
During the closing weekend (4–5 March 2017), the performance and multimedia artist Laurie Anderson will show a recent version of The Language of the Future. The first version of this work was iconically featured in the 1984 show Good Morning, Mr. Orwell by Nam June Paik. In this new work the artist blends spoken word, violin, and electronic sounds crossing borders between dreams, reality, and the elusive world of information. As a pioneer in the field of multimedia art, Anderson showed her CD-Rom artwork Puppet Motel at the 1996 edition of transmediale, when the festival was still called VideoFest. The Language of the Future explores the inextricable links between past, present, and future and is Laurie Anderson’s first performance in Berlin since five years.

Nach den ersten Ankündigungen Anfang November freuen wir uns, die Höhepunkte aus dem einmonatigen Programm von ever elusive – thirty years of transmediale bekanntzugeben. Das dreißigjährige Bestehen wird vom 2. Februar bis zum 5. März 2017 mit zahlreichen Veranstaltungen in ganz Berlin gefeiert. Mit der transmediale 2017 wird das HKW nach einer umfassenden Renovierung wiedereröffnet.

Die Kulturstiftung des Bundes fördert die transmediale seit 2004 als kulturelle Spitzeneinrichtung. Die Förderung wird, wie vor Kurzem entschieden, bis zum Jahr 2022 mit einem erhöhten Etat von 550.000 Euro pro jährlicher Ausgabe fortgeführt.
Während der Festivaltage, der Exkursionen und des Abschlusswochenendes verhandeln rund 180 internationale Denker_innen und Kulturproduzent_innen in Diskussionsrunden, Performances, Workshops, Screenings und der Sonderausstellung alien matter die heutige Rolle der Medien neu. Im Fokus steht dabei die Frage, wo die Macht zu agieren und zu vermitteln in einer Welt liegt, in der Technologien zunehmend unabhängig vom Menschen operieren.

Festival
Am ersten Tag des dreitägigen Festivals im Haus der Kulturen der Welt (3.–5. Februar 2017) zeigt die transmediale gemeinsam mit CTM – Festival for Adventurous Music and Art die audiovisuelle Performance Lexachast. Diese wird von dem futuristischen Sound Design-Duo Amnesia Scanner und PAN Label-Gründer Bill Kouligas präsentiert. Ihr dystopischer Soundtrack kreist um die von Algorithmen generierten Live-Streaming-Visuals des Künstlers Harm van den Dorpel – NSFW (Not Safe For Work)-Inhalte aus den tiefsten Ecken des Internets. Die potenziell provokativen Visuals erscheinen so selbst für die Performer überraschend und verweisen mit Blick auf den Materialüberfluss des Internets auf unsere Schuldhaftigkeit und Verwundbarkeit.
Digitale Technologien sind zu einem Teil unserer allgemeinen gesellschaftlichen Infrastruktur geworden und übernehmen darin eine immer aktivere Rolle. Dies fordert unser Denken über die Infrastruktur an sich und den anthropozentrischen Blick auf die Rolle und den Einfluss von Technologien heraus. In der Keynote Conversation Becoming Infrastructural – Becoming Environmental untersuchen die Medienwissenschaftlerin Lisa Parks und der Philosoph, Medien- und Kulturtheoretiker Erich Hörl die Herausforderungen und Grenzen der „infrastrukturellen und ökologischen Wende”.
Ein weiteres Highlight ist der künstlerische Dokumentarfilm The Sprawl (Propaganda About Propaganda) des niederländischen Design- und Forschungsstudios Metahaven aus dem Jahr 2016, der am zweiten Festivaltag gezeigt wird. Der Film stellt die These auf, dass das Internet zu einer zerstörerischen geopolitischen Wunderwaffe geworden ist: Wer profitiert von den sozialen Medien? Drückt Bildbearbeitungs-Software eine Ideologie aus? Ermöglicht das Internet ästhetischen Terrorismus? The Sprawl ist ein paranoider, mit rastlosen futuristischen Beats von Kuedo unterlegter digitaler Trip, in dem sich Form und Inhalt gegenseitig beeinflussen.

Die Keynote Conversation Immediate & Habitual: The Elusiveness of Mediation zwischen Wendy Hui Kyong Chun und Richard Grusin, Wissenschaftler_innen im Bereich Neue Medien, behandelt die Frage, was die verschiedenen Akteure der sich stetig ausweitenden Medienlandschaft verbindet. Ob menschliche oder nichtmenschliche Akteure, User oder Maschinen, Körper oder Medienobjekte – die verschwimmenden Grenzen zwischen Mensch und Maschine weisen in eine Zukunft fortlaufender und doch kaum wahrnehmbarer Transformationen.
In der Keynote Conversation Strange Ecologies: From Necropolitics to Reproductive Revolutions erforscht der Künstler und Mitbegründer des Künstlerkollektivs Critical Art Ensemble (CAE) Steve Kurtz zusammen mit dem Performancekünstler Johannes Paul Raether die politischen Strukturen und Machtmechanismen hinter unserem Umwelt- und Evolutionsdenken. Sie prüfen die damit verbundenen Fragen und Widersprüche und untersuchen die wenig sichtbaren oder sogar inoffiziellen, mit der Politik des Todes und der Reproduktion verknüpften Bereiche im sogenannten Kapitalozän.

Abschlusswochenende
Während des Abschlusswochenendes zeigt die Performance- und Multimedia-Künstlerin Laurie Anderson am 4. und 5. März 2017 die jüngste Version von The Language of the Future. Die erste Version ihrer Arbeit erlangte 1984 in Nam June Paiks Show Good Morning, Mr. Orwell Kultstatus. In ihrer neuen Solo-Performance führt die Künstlerin Spoken Word mit Violinen- und elektronischen Klängen zusammen und überschreitet dabei die Grenzen zwischen Traum, Realität und der flüchtigen Welt der Informationen. Als Pionierin im Bereich multimedialer Kunst zeigte sie bereits in der transmediale-Ausgabe von 1996 ihre CD-ROM-Arbeit Puppet Motel, als das Festival noch VideoFest hieß. The Language of the Future untersucht die untrennbare Verbindung zwischen Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft und ist Laurie Andersons erster Auftritt seit mehr als fünf Jahren in Berlin.
