The American alternative architecture and urban projects presented in this documentary either refer back to utopian tendencies from the 1960s/70s or take them up in the design of downtown Los AngelesÂ’ homeless shelters. At that time, the withdrawal from modern cityscapes, and mutual secession from the compulsive rationality illustrated by right angles and simple geometrical forms, called for the creation of new utopian spaces. These spaces were to create, through spatial form and organization and construction materials, a place for new utopian social models where alternative and spiritual lifestyles could flourish. Some still exist today. The film presents Lama Foundation (New Mexico, 1968), Arcosanti (Arizona, 1970) by Paolo Soleris, Earthship by Mike Reynolds (New Mexico, 1975), Nader Khalili's Superadobe Houses (California, 1976), and the Dome Village (California, 1996) by Ted Hays.
