Edgar Varese's opus "Deserts" (1949-54), already designed as music-film, was never materialized. Even the title seems to be created as a screen for Viola's central issues: birth and death, time and perception. They reappear in this video like a condensation, often as variations of previous works — pictures like icons. An audiovisual experiment tracing the transitions and crossroads of inner and outer deserts.
