A restless night, fragments of dreams blend into pictures that rise from the bottom of a man’s memory, they surface, pass by, and seem to stand still. Mother, son, birth, death, infinity of time, infinity of space. A maelstrom of night images, filmed partly using a highly light-sensitive camera, in the deserts of Colorado and Nevada and in the streets of Los Angeles at night. Viola has added portraits of his surrounding, his family, and himself. With this calm work in black and white, Viola has driven his typical minimalistic and meditating style to an extreme intensity.
