In the dark of the night, Patron, a young orphan, silently follows the instructions of his adoptive father to become a speedboat captain. Soon he will take his first clandestine passengers and smuggle goods from Anjouan to Mayotte. Because he is a minor, Patron can’t be arrested by the local authorities. Both islands belong to the Comoros archipelago, located off the south-east coast of Africa and north-west of Madagascar. But only Mayotte is an insular department and region of France. In her debut short film, Laura Henno addresses the brutal reality of migration, borders, inequality, and the loss of childhood in an unusual and meticulously photographed way.
