Song to the Front takes Bài ca ra trận—the eponymous Northern Vietnamese war propaganda movie from 1973, produced by the Vietnam Feature Film Studio and directed by Tran Dac—as its central source. Set to music from Igor Stravinsky’s ballet and orchestral concert work The Rite of Spring, Nguyen Trinh Thi turns the rarely seen black and white classic into a small vignette that deconstructs the aesthetic and political elements of the social-realist melodrama. The artist’s version of Song to the Front plays with the original plot line in a deliberately ambiguous manner, designing an imaginative space for the viewer’s reinterpretation of history and memory.
