Matthias Müller
Born in 1961, Bielefeld, Germany. Studied Arts and German Literature at Bielefeld University and Fine Arts at Braunschweig Academy of Art (under Birgit Hein and Gerhard Büttenbender). Master's degree in 1991. Films since 1980. Founding member of filmmaker's coop ALTE KINDER. Collaborations with composer Dirk Schaefer since 1985 and video artist Christoph Girardet since 1999. Organisation of touring programs, film series and festivals (e.g. "Found Footage Film Festival"). Since 2003 Professor for Experimental Filmmaking at Kunsthochschule für Medien (KHM), Köln, Germany. His film Home Stories from 1990 is a classic in the genre of the serial found-footage film. In the past twenty years his films and videos have been shown at international festivals, such as Berlin, Venice, Cannes, Rotterdam and Toronto. He has received numerous awards, e.g. the Award of the German Film Critics(1991, 1997, and 2000), the annual film award of the Association of German Film Critics (2000) and the Marler Video Art Award (2004, together with Christoph Girardet).His films and videos are part of the collections of institutions such as the Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris), Museu d'Art Contemporani (Barcelona), Nederlands Film Museum (Amsterdam), Australian Centre For The Moving Image (Melbourne), Kunsthalle Bielefeld, Towner Art Museum (Eastbourne), Frac Haute Normandie (Rouen), Goetz Collection (Munich), and Tate Modern (London).
