2014 Vilém Flusser Residency for Artistic Research Artist in Residence Rosemary Lee will lead a reading and discussion related to her research at the _Vilém_Flusser_Archive. Her project, Molten Media, examines the cultural obsession with the creation and storage of codes as well as their paradoxical disposability.

Proceeding from Vilém Flusser's "apparatus-operator complex, devour[ing] texts, to spit them out again as techno-images" (1) we approach coding from various angles: biological, technological, historical/post-historical, in search of interconnections with the ecology and ubiquity of the apparatus. Unsatisfied to merely implement biomachinery in an externalized fashion, the logic of encoding and execution of scripts becomes so embedded in life that it comes to transform the forms of life itself.

Examining the materiality of devices, likening them to fossils, suggests taking a long-term view of media technology. Applying a deep-time perspective to a rapid-cycling throwaway media culture, projects an alternate timescale for its material existence. To think of these objects in such terms begs the question of their origins, where this material will go when it has finished serving its purpose, as well as questioning its relation to our natural history.
