1. Making/Thinking: The Cultural Tomorrow The process of climate change is a multidimensional phenomenon signalling a paradigmatic and dramatic cultural change. As such we are witnessing a planetary transformation process that alters the social, political and economic condition of cultures in our world. Countering what seems to be an unidentifyable and seemingly uncontrollable enemy requires radical new modes of thinking and agency. Taking its cues from the DEEP NORTH of contemporary and technological Inuit culture the conference examines the global repercussions of actions set into motion at the Earth's northern polar region. The conference begins Wednesday, 28.01. and runs until Saturday, 31.01. A special Brunch event hosted by the Brazilian Descentro network will fuse the festival conference and salon events together on Sunday February 01. Conference sessions take place in the Auditorium of the House of World Cultures. Admission is 9 euros, reduced 7 euros. Tickets may be purchased in advance, starting on 15.01. The conference of transmediale.09 is organised in cooperation with the Federal Agency for Civic Education.

2. Hot Spots Hot Spots link the conference with the salon programme. Artists will present their work and concepts, according to the thematic frame of the conference and/or salon of that day. Hotspot 1 Marko Peljhan Arctic Perspectives - Third Culture on the Floe Edge Thu, 29.01. 1830 hrs The geocultural territories of the Arctic are poorly understood in the hemispheric centre of our planet. Mirages of vast open frontiers that will enable a renewed lease on global resourcing are colliding with cultures embodying deep memories and reflection of 19th and 20th century devastation and exploitation strategies and astute social, cultural and spatial navigation/survival capabilities. The theatre of the geopolitical North, living in the survivalist, mercantilist and global security and climate change visions that feed its narratives, is juxtaposed to an alliance of geocultures that are aimed at its reflection and deconstruction. Hotspot 2 Territorial Agency (John Palmesino and Ann-Sofi Roennskog) Escalation Fri, 30.01. 1030 hrs The intervention is part of a larger project aimed at tracing the new conditions in the inhabited landscapes in the North, investigating and analysing the phenomena of ESCALATION. Almost following the exponential global temperature increase charts, the news referring about conflictual visions about possible uses of the natural resources in the North, increased risks of ecological mutations, claims of sovereignty, new mineral oil deposits and fields being discovered, conversions of industrial infrastructures, new plans for connecting existing transportation networks are flooding in daily. In a pattern similar to that that characterised the conflict architecture of the Cold War, escalation seems to be the dominant theme of today's transformation processes in the North. While escalation in the thermonuclear arms race during the Cold War was substantially a deterrent strategy, today its consequences are a sort of meltdown of given pre-conceived assumptions about the stability of the region and of the knowledge pools, practices and protocols we activate to describe the contemporary relation between inhabitation and geography.

Opening of the Conference Thu, 29.01. beginning at 1300 hrs Emerging in a global blind spot the consequences of climate change have the potential to unleash a radical capacity for transformation breaking through history, blowing across boundaries, ripping through political sytsems and cultural roots. Political philosopher Carl Schmitt, making the distinction between 'the real enemy' and 'the absolute enemy' hints at the possibility of enacting cultural techniques in confronting the massive scale of the threats we are facing. 4. Shift Break, Control - Cultural Perspectives beyond Policy Fri, 30.01. beginning at 1200 hrs When it comes to climate change, many systems of control designed around national borders break down: internationally restrictive trade processes and systems of enforcement have little or power in the face of desertification, mass flooding, forced migration and other social and environmental disasters. The industrial and heavy technological revolutions in 19th/20th century Europe and US contained a blindness to the consequences of these developments. We now need new strategies to prevent cultural, social and ethical collapse. Can scaling up local initiatives help meet global challenges? What can we learn from models that distribute insecurity as a default; such as those which are improvised and informal in Lagos, New Delhi and Karachi? 5. Climate change as paradigm shift Sat, 31.01. beginning at 1030 hrs Things sometimes happen which change forever the condition of being alive in a particular era. Events, like the fall of the Berlin Wall, or the Cuban Missile Crisis, or 9/11, have had both a real and symbolic impact on the Western Imagination and have geopolitical, social and cultural consequences, that change the whole world forever. Why is it, that such events, for all our scenario planning, visualising, mapping and data mining techniques, are so unpredictable? Is there any ethical or moral teleology in the global transformation process called climate change? What does it mean to understand climate change as cultural change? What might the long-term psychological effect of this be? Can we begin to forsee where it all might end? 1030 hrs: Introductory Keynote by Sheila Jasanoff The professor of science and technology studies at Havard University talks about the changes in political culture in the context of global transformation processes. 1300 hrs: Discussion Climate change as paradigm shift with: Endre Kiss, Lutz Dammbeck and Victor Nemchinov, chaired by Rob van Kranenburg

6. Environment 2.0 Sat, 31.01. 1600 hrs Drawing together the perspectives of environmental scientists, web technologists interested in the interface between digital footprint and environmental footprint, and artists concerned with creating precedents for social change on environmental sustainability. Environment 2.0 seeks to decode the complex relationships between people, nature and technology, at a time when the nature of humankind's relationship to the environment is changing, as the world ceases to be inert raw material and becomes instead navigable, computable and manipulable. A key interest is creative interdisciplinary practice that intervenes in the social processes that shape our relationship to the environment, not through artworks staged in distant beauty spots, but through creative interventions closer to home that can help contribute to social change, or that suggest alternative perspectives on sustainability. The Houses of Happiness is a real life Brazilian initiative involving a series of dwellings where artists and programmers live, work and develop lifestyles based on an integrated relationship with ecology and cosmology working with the constraints of nature and embedding technologies as antennaes of change. 1. Das Denken und das Handeln - Kulturelle Perspektiven im Wandel

Der Klimawandel laesst sich als ein anthropologischer Prozess betrachten, der soziale und kulturelle Strategien erfordert, die ueber die strukturellen Routinen von Politik, Industrie und Oekonomie hinausreichen. Die kulturelle und individuelle Sphaehre koennte neue Handlungsraeume schaffen, um dem Klimawandel zu begegnen. Die Konferenz des Festivals nimmt ihren poetischen Ausgangspunkt im DEEP NORTH der Inuit-Kultur und erweitert die kuenstlerische, philosophische und geopolitische Wahrnehmung auf die digitalen Kulturen unserer Welt.
Die Konferenz beginnt am Donnerstag, den 29.01. um 13 Uhr und endet am Samstag, den 31.01 um 18 Uhr. Am Sonntag, den 01.02 ab 11 Uhr erfaehrt das Haus der Kulturen der Welt eine performative Transformation zum House of Happiness durch die brasilianische Kuenstlergruppe Descentro. Alle Konferenzveranstaltungen finden im Auditorium statt, der Eintritt betraegt 9 bzw. ermaessigt 7 Euro. Der Brico Brunch findet im Restaurant des HKW statt. Karten koennen ab dem 15.01. im Vorverkauf erworben werden. Die Konferenz der transmediale.09 findet durch die Unterstuetzung und in Zusammenarbeit mit der Bundeszentrale fuer politische Bildung statt.

2. Hot Spots

Hot Spots sind gesonderte Veranstaltungen in denen Konferenz und Salon sich inhaltlich verbinden. Strategien und Praxisansaetze fuehrender Kuenstler und Designer werden hier vertieft. Die kuenstlerische Praesentation findet thematisch im Rahmen des jeweiligen Konferenz- bzw. Salon-Tages statt. 

Hotspot 1: Marko Peljhan
Arktische Kultur - Vision einer geokulturellen Rueckbesinnung
Do, 29.01. 18.30 Uhr
Die Arktis ist in ihrer zentralen Bedeutung als geokulturelles Gebiet unseres Planeten nach wie vor verkannt. Einerseits herrscht die Illusion eines grenzenlosen Ortes vor, dessen Ressourcen fuer den globalen Energiebedarf verfuegbar werden. Diese Fortschreibung ruecksichtsloser und verheerender Ausbeutungsstrategien des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts kollidieren andererseits mit den weitsichtigen sozialen, kulturellen und raeumlichen Navigations- und Ueberlebenstechniken der arktischen Bewohner. Das Theater des geopolitischen Nordens, dessen Geschichte von Unternehmern, globalen Sicherheitsfirmen und Prognosen des Klimawandels bestimmt ist, steht einer geokulturellen Gemeinschaft der Rueckbesinnung und Anpassung gegenueber.

Taeglich werden die Charts des globalen Temperaturanstieg aktualisiert, erreichen uns Nachrichten ueber den Streit um die natuerlichen Ressourcen im Norden, erhoehtes Risiko fuer oekologische Mutationen, Hoheitsansprueche angrenzender Laender, die Entdeckung neuer arktischer Oelvorkommen, den oekologischen Gesinnungswandel multinationaler Konzerne oder immer neue Plaene, wie Transport und Logistik von Guetern effizienter gestaltet werden koennten. Hinter diesen 'Breaking News' wird ein Muster erkennbar, das bereits die konfligierende Kommunikationsarchitektur zwischen Ost und West im Kalten Krieg bestimmte. Die Eskalation erscheint als zentrale mediale, oekonomische und politische Strategie in der Darstellung und im Umgang mit dem Transformationsprozess im Norden. Waehrend die Eskalation im Wettlauf um die thermonukleare Aufruestung waehrend des Kalten Krieges vor allem eine Strategie der Abschreckung darstellte, laesst sich dieses Protokoll nicht mehr anwenden, um die sich veraendernden geoterritorialen Bedingungen zu erfassen und die politische Stabilitaet dieser Region aufrecht zu erhalten.

3. Eroeffnung der Konferenz

Die Reflexe politischer und oekonomischer Technologien sind zu langsam, deren Arsenal zu einseitig und deren Instrumentarium zu unpraezise. Wenn die gegenwaertige Verteilung von Macht, Technologie, Innovation und Kritik wirkungslos bleibt, dann muss das Handlungsprinzip aus der politisch-oekonomischen in die kulturelle und individuelle Sphaere verschoben werden. Koennen wir den oppositionellen Diskurs von Aktivisten, Industrie und demokratischer Politik ueberwinden? Wenn ja, wie koennte eine solche Kooperation aussehen? Welche verbindende Sprache wuerde diese formulieren? Wie wuerde sie politisches, kulturelles und individuelles Handeln definieren? Was wuerde ihr Stabilitaet und Integritaet geben, damit auch andere diesem Beispiel folgen?

4. Politische Grenzen - Kulturelle Moeglichkeiten

Nationalstaatliche Grenzen und Handelszonen bestimmen nach wie vor die Verteilung von Wissen und Technologie. Klimatische Veraenderungen nehmen darauf aber keine Ruecksicht. Entscheidend bei der Suche nach Strategien, diesem umfassenden Wandel zu begegnen, ist die Notwendigkeit, rentable Geschaeftsmodelle in den Prozess der globalen Industrialisierung einzuflechten. Haben wir aus den Fehlern der Vergangenheit gelernt und koennen wir diese Erfahrungen in transnationale und transkulturelle Klimainitiativen und Geschaeftsmodelle umwandeln? Und was koennen wir umgekehrt von den improvisierten und informellen Strukturen der Kleinunternehmer in Lagos oder Bangladesh lernen?

5. Klimawandel als geopolitischer Umbruch

Manchmal treten Ereignisse ein, die die Lebensumstaende in einer Epoche fuer immer veraendern. Ereignisse wie der Fall der Mauer, die kubanische Raketenkrise oder 9/11 hatten gleichermassen reale wie symbolische Auswirkungen auf die Vorstellungskraft der westlichen Zivilisation. Deren soziale, geopolitische und kulturelle Folgen haben unsere Welt fuer immer veraendert. Wie kommt es, dass diese Ereignisse trotz aller Strategien, Szenarien, Aufzeichnungs- und Auswertungssysteme so unvorhersehbar bleiben? Gibt es irgendeine Form ethischer oder moralischer Teleologie in diesem globalen, klimakulturellen Transformationsprozess? Was bedeutet es, Klimawandel als einen kulturellen Wandel aufzufassen? Wie koennte sich eine solche Verschiebung in der Psychologie der Wahrnehmung langfristig auswirken? Koennen wir schon sehen wie alles enden wird?

6. Umwelt und Gesellschaft 2.0

Umwelt und Gesellschaft 2.0 versucht, das komplexe Beziehungsgeflecht zwischen Gesellschaft, Natur und Technologie zu entschluesseln. In einer Zeit, in der sich durch die Technologisierung das Verhaeltnis der Menschheit zur Natur und zur sozialen Umgebung auf solch radikale Weise veraendert, muessen wir nach einer kreativen, interdisziplinaeren Praxis suchen, die in soziale Formationsprozesse eingreifen und diese mitgestalten kann. Kuenstlerische, politische und soziale Interventionsstrategien sind notwendig, um den sich veraendernden Bedingungen nicht nur ausgeliefert zu sein, sondern diese aktivistisch mit gestalten zu koennen.

7. House of Happiness Brunch - Individueller Wandel in einer digitalen Kultur
So, 01.02. 11 Uhr

Was passiert, wenn Norden, Sueden, Osten und Westen ihre klimatische Festschreibung verlieren? Und was geschieht, wenn sich die geopolitischen Zentren aufloesen und an die Peripherie gedraengt werden? Houses of Happiness ist eine Initiative brasilianischer Kuenstler, Kuratoren, Technologen und Hacker, die zusammen wohnen, leben und arbeiten. Diese Gemeinschaft als soziale Mikrostruktur ist immer wieder Ausgangspunkt fuer die Projekte der Kuenstlergruppe Descentro. Das Projekt Houses of Happiness ist eine temporaere, performative Wohngemeinschaft, die sich in ihrer Arbeit mit oekologischen und kosmologischen Bedingungen auseinandersetzen, sich den Moeglichkeiten der Natur anpassen und Technologie als Antennen des Wandels begreifen.

Musik, Essen, Performances und kritische Diskussionen sind der Treibstoff fuer diese Vision einer kosmopolitischen Gemeinschaft. Sie sind eingeladen, an dieser performativen Transformation der brasilianischen Kuenstlergruppe Descentro teilzunehmen und mitzuwirken. Klimaerwaermung werden immer eindringlicher. Wie steht es aber um den Umgang mit Werten und der Verantwortungsbereitschaft in unserer Gesellschaft? Welche Freiraeume werden Innovationen und neuen Ideen in der heutigen Wirtschaft eingeraeumt? Welche Art von Fortschritt brauchen wir, welche Kommunikationskonzepte, um wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse transparent und spuerbar zu machen?
Mit Staatssekretaer Michael Mueller, Bernd Wiemann (Leiter der Forschungs- und Entwicklungsabteilung Vodafone Germany) und dem Kuenstler Hermann Josef Hack.
