transmediale has launched the month-long program of ever elusive – thirty years of transmediale with sold-out festival days at the newly renovated Haus der Kulturen der Welt.
In addition to the special exhibition “alien matter,” which runs until 5 March 2017 at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, three thematic excursions targeting specific aspects of ever elusive take place at different venues in Berlin. The closing weekend (4–5 March 2017), culminates with a performance by multimedia artist Laurie Anderson, the first in Berlin since five years. On each evening, Anderson presents a recent version of her work The Language of the Future and speaks about her career spanning multimedia work shown at past editions of transmediale to her current experiments in VR.
The first excursion Imaginaries takes place on 8 February 2017 at Langenbeck-Virchow-Haus. Imaginaries challenges standardized histories and future trajectories of media practice and theory through discussions and a performance by Rasheedah Phillips and Moor Mother of Black Quantum Futurism Collective.
The panel Alternative Futurism: Middle-East Imaginaries responds to current discussions in Gulf futurism. Panelists Bager Akbay, Morehshin Allahyari, Ayhan Ayteş, Ebru Yetişkin, and moderator Jussi Parikka imagine potential outcomes for placing key moments of Western technological histories in media archaeologies of the Middle East.
During the performative reading Ritual Causality 003, Rasheedah Phillips and Moor Mother of Black Quantum Futurism Collective weave science fiction realities with African concepts of time, ritual, and sound presenting innovative works that offer practical ways for escaping time loops, oppression vortices, and the digital matrix.
In the lower foyer, the visitors have the opportunity to browse their book Black Quantum Futurism Theory & Practice (2015) while listening to a collection of tracks developed especially for the volume.
Two further installations are also on view in the foyer including The Watch by cultural history researcher Sophia Gräfe and artist Darsha Hewitt. The video and installation re-imagines domestic technology from the German Democratic Republic, and sets out to explore how subtle forms of surveillance are felt in domestic and psychic spaces, connecting everyday technology used in the GDR with present-day issues related to privacy and household autonomy.
The Last Angel of History (1996) is an influential video-essay by John Akomfrah and Black Audio Film Collective's Edward George, which looks at the origins, impact, and significance of Afrofuturism and techno music for the black diaspora. It was screened and nominated for an award at transmediale in 1997.

Mit ausverkauften Festivaltagen ist die transmediale im neu renovierten Haus der Kulturen der Welt in das einen Monat laufende Programm von ever elusive – thirty years of transmediale gestartet.
Parallel zur Sonderausstellung alien matter, die bis zum 5. März 2017 im Haus der Kulturen der Welt gezeigt wird, finden drei thematische Exkursionen an verschiedenen Veranstaltungsorten in Berlin statt, die verschiedene Aspekte von ever elusive behandeln.
Das Abschlusswochenende (4. und 5. März 2017) gipfelt im ersten Auftritt der Künstlerin Laurie Anderson seit mehr als fünf Jahren in Berlin: An zwei Abenden zeigt sie die jüngste Version ihrer Performance The Language of the Future und gibt einen Einblick in ihre Multimedia-Arbeit – von ihren Auftritten bei vergangenen transmediale-Ausgaben bis hin zu ihren aktuellen VR-Experimenten.
Die erste Exkursion Imaginaries am 8. Februar 2017 geht ins Langenbeck-Virchow-Haus: In Diskussionen und einer Performance von Rasheedah Phillips und Moor Mother von Black Quantum Futurism Collective werden gängige Entstehungsgeschichten und Zukunftsvisionen von Medienpraktiken und -denken infrage gestellt, um alternative Zukunftsszenarien zu entwerfen.
Das Panel Alternative Futurism: Middle-East Imaginaries reagiert auf die aktuelle Diskussion um den „Golf-Futurismus”: Was wäre, wenn wir die Schlüsselmomente westlicher Technikgeschichte in die Medienarchäologien des Vorderen Orients platzieren würden?

In der performativen Lesung Ritual Causality 003 verweben Rasheedah Phillips und Moor Mother von Black Quantum Futurism Collective Science-Fiction-Wirklichkeiten mit afrikanischen Konzepten von Zeit, Ritual und Klang und präsentieren innovative Arbeiten, die praktische Auswege aus Zeitschleifen, den Strudeln der Unterdrückung und der digitalen Matrix bieten.
Im unteren Foyer können die Besucher_innen Rasheedah Phillips’ und Moor Mothers Buch Black Quantum Futurism Theory & Practice (2015) anschauen und zugleich eine für den Band entwickelte Sammlung von Tracks anhören.
Im Foyer sind zwei weitere Installationen zu sehen:
Die transmediale präsentiert zum ersten Mal The Watch von Kulturwissenschaftlerin Sophia Gräfe und Künstlerin Darsha Hewitt. Die aus einem Video und einer Installation bestehende Arbeit deutet Haushaltstechnik in Form eines Rasenmähers aus der DDR um: Das Projekt erkundet, wie subtile Formen der Überwachung in häuslichen und psychischen Räumen wahrgenommen werden und verbindet Technologien aus dem Alltagsleben in der DDR mit heutigen Fragen der Privatsphäre und Haushaltsautonomie.
The Last Angel of History (1996) ist ein einflussreicher Video-Essay von John Akomfrah und Edward George vom britischen Black Audio Film Collective. Es behandelt die Ursprünge, Auswirkungen und Bedeutung von Afrofuturismus und Techno-Musik für die Schwarze Diaspora. Seine Struktur macht den Film zur Meta-Erzählung, die das Genre des Afrofuturismus kommentiert und Teil davon wird. The Last Angel of History wurde bereits 1997 bei der transmediale (damals: transmedia) gezeigt und für den transmediale Award nominiert.
