transmediale 2019: Opening

On 31 January, transmediale 2019 (https://2019.transmediale.de/theme) opens its four-day festival program at Haus der Kulturen der Welt.

This year, transmediale creates an environment for learning and emerging cultural forms to address the affective dimension of digital culture today. With its focus on discursive and performative formats, this time the festival foregoes an exhibition and clearly defined sections: Screenings, performances, workshops, and talks are continuously integrated and relate to one another in a hybrid program structure.

The 32nd edition starts with the opening event Structures of Feeling (https://2019.transmediale.de/content/structures-of-feeling-transmediale-...) featuring Hannah Davis, Bernd Scherer, Anna Tuschling, Stefan Wellgraf, and Kristoffer Gansing. They examine the present turn to affect, emotion, and feeling in the context of society, technology, and politics through different approaches such as a tech tutorial on emotions in machine learning and an ethnography of feelings of inferiority.

Emanuel Almborg’s film The Nth Degree (https://2019.transmediale.de/content/the-nth-degree-0) is shown all night and is based on a theater project that brings together young people from London and Wales to draw connections between two historical riots and attendant issues of race, class, and property. The screening is accompanied by a talk between the artist and Julienne Lorz, moderated by curator Florian Wüst.

The new global phenomenon #purplenoise (https://2019.transmediale.de/content/opting-out-is-not-an-option) brings its explosive mix of ruthless action, true love, and social (dis-)information to HKW, while Exhibition Hall 1 opens up a performative space in which Marija Bozinovska Jones presents the latest instalment of her ongoing performance project Fascia (https://2019.transmediale.de/content/fascia-18100619013) , which sets out to explore formative and exploitative processes of affect as they manifest in quantification, datafication, self-optimization, and artificial intelligence.

COOL FOR YOU creates ambiguous atmospheres of seemingly contradicting emotions in her performance FEELING DIFFICULTIES (https://2019.transmediale.de/content/feeling-difficulties) .

In addition, DJ ShluchT, Panasiagirl, ¥€$Si, !Mediengruppe Bitnik, Omsk Social Club, and special guests present the CryptoRave #8.

transmediale 2019: Eröffnung

Am 31. Januar eröffnet die transmediale 2019 (https://2019.transmediale.de/de/theme) ihr viertägiges Festivalprogramm im Haus der Kulturen der Welt.

Dieses Jahr schafft die transmediale eine Umgebung für Lernprozesse und entstehende kulturelle Formen, um sich mit der affektiven Dimension der gegenwärtigen digitalen Kultur zu beschäftigen. Mit seinem Fokus auf diskursiven und performativen Formaten verzichtet das Festival dieses Mal auf eine Ausstellung und klar definierte Sektionen: Screenings, Performances, Vorträge und Workshops werden in einer hybriden Programmstruktur kontinuierlich miteinander verzahnt und aufeinander bezogen.

Die 32. Ausgabe beginnt mit der Eröffnungsveranstaltung Structures of Feeling (https://2019.transmediale.de/de/content/structures-of-feeling-transmedia...) mit Hannah Davis, Bernd Scherer, Anna Tuschling, Stefan Wellgraf und Kristoffer Gansing, die die gegenwärtige Wende in Richtung Affekt, Emotion und Gefühl im Kontext von Gesellschaft, Technologie und Politik unter anderem in Form eines Tech-Tutorials zu Emotionen im maschinellen Lernen und einer Ethnografie der Minderwertigkeitsgefühle beleuchten.

Während des gesamten Abends wird Emanuel Almborgs Film The Nth Degree (https://2019.transmediale.de/de/content/the-nth-degree-0) gezeigt, der auf einem Theaterstück basiert und junge Menschen aus London und Wales zusammenbringt, um Verbindungen zwischen zwei historischen Aufständen und damit zusammenhängenden Themen wie Race, Class und Eigentum herauszuarbeiten. Das zu jeder vollen Stunde beginnende Screening wird um ein Gespräch zwischen dem Künstler und Julienne Lorz ergänzt, das von Kurator Florian Wüst moderiert wird.

Das neue globale Phänomen #purplenoise (https://2019.transmediale.de/de/content/opting-out-is-not-an-option) bringt seine explosive Mischung aus rücksichtslosem Handeln, sozialer (Des)Information und wahrer Liebe ins HKW, während die Ausstellungshalle 1 zu einem performativen Raum wird: Marija Bozinovska Jones präsentiert hier die neueste Episode ihres laufenden Performanceprojekts Fascia (https://2019.transmediale.de/de/content/fascia-18100619013) , in dem sie formgebende und ausbeuterische Prozesse von Affekten erforscht – und wie sich diese in Quantifizierung, Datafizierung, Selbstoptimierung und künstlicher Intelligenz manifestieren.
