Virtual Art Space #2
Virtual Art Space #2
We have invited along six artists who work in ‘virtual art space’in the hope that, together with guest curator and chair, Tom Sperlich, they will be able to clarify the situation.
Jeffrey Shaw has been active in virtual space for sometime now with projects such as ‘The Legible City’, the ‘Extended Virtual Environment’and the ‘Virtual Museum’, in which he has consistently engaged in the creation of virtual spaces.
In ‘Solveet Coagula’,Stahl Stenslie, who came to fame as a result of ‘CyberSM’(he created the first machine for virtual sex together with Kirk Woodford), puts people in a sensory environment where they can interact with artificial creatures.
Christian Ziegler offers a kind of virtual environment, an interactive road movie enabling users to travel through the States.
Kathy Rae Huffmann and Karl Dudesek have built up a VRML collection. However, the ‘VRML ART’ project is more than that. It organises conferences and concerns itself with theoretical issues.
Katharina Gsöllpointer, a culture and media theoretician who was in charge of the Ars Electrónica programme for many years, is currently involved in a research project on new artistic categories in the media context. She will, therefore, approach ‘virtual art space’ more from the theoretical angle.
A panel discussion with her and other participants will round off the two events.
