The publication in 1910 of the poem Weitende (World's End) ushered in the decade of German Expressionist poetry. The poem opens by sweeping the hats off the peaked heads of respectable citizens, conveying with subtle irony the growing sense of contempt for the stifling, complacent society of Wilhelmine Germany, whose imminent downfall is described in the pronouncement that "the storm has come".
