Working for BRTN's Arts Unit since 1979 mainly as a documentarist, Stefaan Decostere has portrayed Jorge Semprun, John Cage and Merce Cunningham, Nam June Paik, Federico Fellini a.o.. His art documentaries like "The Double Portrait" or the series on film, "Charbon Velours", appear to regard presentation itself as the interesting issue. But any moralising and formalistic approach of making television about television is balanced by his fascination for the image in general and for TV and video as new-fashioned "Gesamtkunstwerk" in particular. Stefaan Decostere will be present to introduce his work and in particular his recent "Travelogue" series which explores parallels between different forms of cultural display: the museum, the world's fair, the city, film, television, the shopping mall and the tourist site. Within all of these forms, legacies of power, colonialism and sexism are revealed, and alternative ideas are presented. The "Travelogues" adapt an engaging and highly reflexive form of responding to and challenging these structures of power. Warum wir Männer die Technik so lieben; De la mano; Travelogue 1: "The Dream of Leopold 11"; Travelogue 2: "The Metamorphoses of Tintin''; Travelogue 3: "Alchemy Bruxelloise"; Travelogue 4: "Coming from the Wrong Side"
