"Videoschlitz" by Wolfgang Schememrt, scan from the VideoFest ‘92 program booklet.

This installation is the electronic realization of a photo-finish camera. The monitor image is the record of the space/time tragedy at the finish line. The visual impression of an image series that is continuously running from right to left is made possible by a video- image digitizer that, fed by the closed-circuit video camera, provides a real time transfer of a pixel array situated in the middle of the image area on to the monitor screen. At the same time the image is being shifted to the left by one column. This is precisely how the photo-finish operates: Instead of a time shutter, a vertical slit lets the light pass through on to the film which is being transported at a constant speed. In contrast to conventional photography only motion is being depicted sharply, whereas the stationary is distorted to a blurred series. In Berlin an extended version of this interactive installation (two towers with 2 monitors each) will link two points of the entrance hail thus enabling "would-be dancers on the finish line” to improvise a duett.
