Digital film - cinema's future, the promise of endless possibilities, unfulfilled hopes, a mystified magic word or an already attained state? For over two decades now, and consequently a period quite worth mentioning in the little over 100-year history of film, computers have been taking on an ever greater role as creative tools in film production. For approximate ly five years now, in the course of science fiction and fantasy blockbusters, digital film design has been undergoing a hype which has divided itself between two seg ments: between digital post-production and digital animation. Both fields of application are in principle as old as cine ma itself. Digital post production merely refines and economises traditional means of trick and copying technologies, whe reas digital animation replaces hand- drawn cell animation.
