Our encounter with the new "video continent" of Latin America began accidentally in Brazil. Since then we've added further journeys to this country, as well as to Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay; contacts to other countries exist, among others, through Gudula Meinzhold from the "Association for Feminist Film Work." The countries of Latin America have virtually no film industries of their own, so traditional narrative forms are realized on video and (extremely) occasionally sold to television stations. The same applies to documentaries. There are also artistic and experimental videos, although the possibilities for tricks are extremely limited by simple equipment - and yet precisely
this constraint seems to promote creativity in terms of content. Worth noting, in contrast to the northern countries, is the frequency with which national themes are used, sometimes in respect to traditions and myths of the respective countries. Cultural and moral questions as well as suppression of the period of the dictators are subjects treated again and again. The situation of training in the area of video is usually bad or non-existent, and there is a comparable lack of chances to get glimpses of developments in the international video world. In the latter case the Goethe Institutes and the French embassies offer some help with showings and seminars. The problem is that such options usually remain restricted to the big cities. Programm 1: Computeranimationen
Programm 2: Künstlerische Experimente
Programm 3: Ungewöhnliche Dokumentationen
Programm 4: Skurrile Fiktionen
