Interactive entertainment of the third milennium. The headlines came thick and fast: ‘Datamonitor forecasts five million online players in E u r o p e b y 2 0 0 2 ’ a n d ‘ O n l i n e g a m e s a r e a g o l d m i n e f o r s o f t w a r e m a n u f a c t u r e r s ’. Impressive figures, indeed, although they are modest compared with the overall total of 150 million Internet users. What’s the truth behind games on the net? A load of new hype? A goldmine? For normal users this is a closed-off world. Very few people are aware that digital and multicultural clans are engaged in bitter feuds with one another on the world wide web.
Media critics such as Neil Postman predicted years ago that we would amuse ourselves to death. Is web fun the way toget there? For young people, in particular-and they are the target group - switching back and forth between real identity and virtual identity in the gigantic chat areas is now an everyday occurrence. Are we looking at mass schizophrenia or new roles being tried out in an ever more complex information society? These and many other issues will be addressed by guests from Germany and Europe during the SOCIETY MEDIUM and MARKET talk shows, which will be rounded off by live acts and presentations providing a look at the current scene.
