A panel on patriotism and sex radicals in the Chinese net sphere

In a newest version of the Chinese Dream, promises of cultural prosperity and economic reform continue to clash with artistic vanguards and sexual or queer intelligence. The Chinese Dream here refers to a current political context of government prerogatives versus creative art works and netizen activism. President Xi Jinping’s use of the term was challenged by Thomas Friedman in the New York Times because it fails to include people’s wider aspirations and struggles for identity. Panelists will critically reflect on the Chinese dream, and play with the popular slogan “to have a dream”. The panel will look into body politics and technologies of sexuality as they are developed by netizen communities, young feminists and emerging queer movements. With recorded intervention by the artists Ai Weiwei and Ai Xiaoming. The panel will be moderated by Katrien Jacobs.
