transmediale 2020 End to End examines the limits of networks

Networks are everywhere, whether personal or organizational, for social or business life, centralized or decentralized: transmediale 2020, the last edition under the artistic direction of Kristoffer Gansing, aims at a broad reevaluation of networks and their limits.

Leaving behind a decade marked by a backlash against the Internet and the network society, the 33rd festival edition entitled End to End focuses on both forgotten and potential futures with and without networks from 28 January to 01 March 2020.

A month-long group exhibition will present new artistic works that both refute and reform networks. The history of European Critical Internet Cultures that emerged in the 1990s serves as an important reference point: Together with a series of other global experiments in autonomous networking they consistently provided alternatives to the technological solutionist thinking and centralized business models of Silicon Valley.

During its first week, the festival will expand on the exhibition through talks, workshops, screenings, and performances where international artists, cultural workers, and theoreticians search for a conceivable counter-power as well as alternative technological models and cultural narratives that can construct the network principle of end-to-end communication anew.

Drawing on the legacies of European critical and autonomous network cultures, transmediale 2020 not only wants to make the limits of Internet-based networks visible but also highlight alternatives to bring about sustainable social change. transmediale 2020 End to End untersucht die Grenzen von Netzwerken

Netzwerke sind überall, seien es persönliche oder organisatorische, gesellschaftliche oder wirtschaftliche, zentrale oder dezentrale: transmediale 2020, die letzte Festivalausgabe unter der künstlerischen Leitung von Kristoffer Gansing, hat eine umfassende Neubewertung von Netzwerken und deren Grenzen zum Ziel.

Ein Jahrzehnt hinter sich lassend, das vor allem durch einen Backlash gegen das Internet und die Netzwerkgesellschaft gekennzeichnet ist, beschäftigt sich die 33. Festivalausgabe unter dem Titel End to End vom 28. Januar bis zum 1. März 2020 mit vergessenen und möglichen Zukunftsszenarien mit und ohne Netzwerke.

Eine einmonatige Gruppenausstellung präsentiert neue künstlerische Arbeiten, die Netzwerke gleichermaßen infrage stellen und neu denken. Als Ausgangspunkt dient die Geschichte europäischer, in den 1990ern entstandener Kritischer Internetkulturen: Zusammen mit einer Reihe anderer weltweiter Experimente zur autonomen Vernetzung boten sie immer wieder Alternativen zum Denken des Technologischen Solutionismus und den zentralisierten Geschäftsmodellen des Silicon Valley.

In der ersten Woche erweitert das Festival die Ausstellung durch Vorträge, Workshops, Screenings und Performances, in denen internationale Künstler*innen, Kulturschaffende und Theoretiker*innen nach einer denkbaren Gegenmacht sowie alternativen technologischen Modellen und kulturellen Narrativen suchen, die das Netzwerkprinzip der End-to-End-Kommunikation neu verhandeln.

Über das Erbe kritischer und unabhängiger Internetkulturen will die transmediale 2020 nicht nur die Grenzen internetbasierter Netzwerke sichtbar machen, sondern auch Alternativen für einen nachhaltigen sozialen Wandel aufzeigen.
