transmediale introduces Study Circles to strengthen the festival as site of knowledge exchange
In keeping with 2019’s focus on cultural emergence and knowledge exchange, transmediale introduces the Study Circles, which frame the upcoming edition and are part of the core program of the festival days taking place from 31 January to 3 February 2019 at Haus der Kulturen der Welt. In response to the festival theme, the Study Circles bring together artists, researchers, and activists in working groups happening before, during, and after transmediale 2019 in order to extend and deepen the process of knowledge production by involving participants at an early stage.
Following on from a recent kick-off working session at TIER.space, the Study Circles will unfold through further meetings and events in November and December, sessions and events as part of the festival program, and an accompanying in-depth documentation in the transmediale/journal online. Participants will zoom in on specific aspects of the festival theme, starting from the technologization and manipulation of affect and emotions, addressing in particular the need for new tools, infrastructures, and methods that allow for collective organization and action. In close cooperation with the Berlin-based project spaces TIER.space, Spektrum, and Import Projects, the Study Circles set out to engage the audience through new formats and multiple levels of involvement as well as strengthen the relationships between transmediale/festival, participants, and the local independent scene.

transmediale and CTM present Actress as collaborative performance
As part of their 2019 festival editions, transmediale and CTM are pleased to present the world premiere of the most recent cooperation between Darren J. Cunningham, aka Actress, and Young Paint. The AI-based character Young Paint has been progressively learning and emulating the shadowy, unpredictable, UK bass- and rave-inspired music of Actress. Over the course of 2018, the AI alter ego has spent time programming and arranging Cunningham’s sonic palette, learning not only how to react to his work, but also to take the lead with the occasional solo. A life-size projection of Young Paint working in a virtual studio parallels Cunningham’s performance on stage, visualizing their collaboration. The two-night transmediale/CTM concert marks the first time that Young Paint will perform live with Actress on stage. |
