transmediale 2020 Presents Month-long Group Exhibition The Eternal Network

As part of transmediale End to End we present the month-long group exhibition The Eternal Network, curated by Kristoffer Gansing with additional advice from Clemens Apprich, Daphne Dragona, Geert Lovink, and Florian Wüst. It will open on January 28, 2020, and remain on view at Haus der Kulturen der Welt until March 1.

About twenty-five international art and research-based works address the persistence of networks, with a focus on their potentials and limits in response to current social and technological changes and the need for new forms of decentralization.

In times of environmental crisis and political turmoil, networks have lost their mass appeal. Whatever we hear about them is usually in the context of a backlash: blackouts, propaganda, hate speech, addiction, and a desire to disintermediate by disconnecting from the platforms of surveillance capitalism. Still, networks have become ubiquitous and essential organizational tools for both activists and big politics, and whether digital or analogue, they seem to have become both poison and cure. Now that the limits of networks are more tangible, the exhibition readdresses “the network question” as being about future models of sociality, technology, and politics in societies after globalization.

Structured according to three lists of key concepts and technocultural shifts, The Eternal Network also features historical materials that relate to the legacies of critical net cultures as they formed in the early days of the public Internet in the 1990s. Their starting point is the eponymous pre-Internet concept proposed by Fluxus artist Robert Filliou, which predicted new possibilities of exchange in an emerging global world.

In the context of this pre-Internet imaginary of networks, the works and projects included in The Eternal Network exhibition close the loop between the pre- and post-Internet moments. With the backlash against networks in mind, it re-examines the legacies of critical net cultures, asking if and how they will continue to have an emancipatory relevance in the future.

transmediale 2020 Präsentiert Einmonatige Gruppenausstellung The Eternal Network

Im Rahmen der transmediale End to End präsentieren wir die einmonatige Gruppenausstellung The Eternal Network, kuratiert von Kristoffer Gansing mit Beratung durch Clemens Apprich, Daphne Dragona, Geert Lovink und Florian Wüst. Die Ausstellung wird am 28. Januar 2020 eröffnet und ist bis zum 1. März im Haus der Kulturen der Welt zu sehen.

Die Gruppenaustellung The Eternal Network thematisiert die Beständigkeit von Netzwerken und konzentriert sich dabei auf die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen dieser Netzwerke als Antwort auf den aktuellen gesellschaftlichen und technologischen Wandel und die Notwendigkeit neuer Formen der Dezentralisierung.

In Zeiten ökologischer Krisen und politischer Turbulenzen haben Netzwerke ihre Massenwirkung verloren. Wann immer wir von ihnen hören, geht es meist um Rückschläge wie Blackouts, Propaganda, Hassreden, Sucht oder der Wunsch, sich der Intermediäre zu entledigen, indem man sich von den Plattformen des Überwachungskapitalismus trennt. Und doch sind Netzwerke mittlerweile allgegenwärtige und unverzichtbare Organisationsmittel für Aktivist*innen wie auch für die große Politik und scheinen, ob digital oder analog, Gift und Gegengift zugleich zu sein. Jetzt, wo die Grenzen der Netzwerke greifbarer geworden sind, behandelt die Ausstellung „die Netzwerkfrage“ als Frage nach zukünftigen Modellen von Sozialität, Technologie und Politik in Gesellschaften nach der Globalisierung.

The Eternal Network ist nach drei Listen mit Schlüsselkonzepten und einschneidenden technokulturellen Veränderungen strukturiert und beinhaltet auch historische Materialien, die sich auf das Vermächtnis kritischer Netzkulturen beziehen, wie sie in den Anfängen des öffentlichen Internets in den 1990er Jahren entstanden. Ihr Ausgangspunkt ist das gleichnamige Konzept des Fluxus-Künstlers Robert Filliou aus Vor-Internet-Zeiten, das neue Möglichkeiten des Austauschs in einer neuen globalen Welt vorhersah.

Vor dem Hintergrund dieser imaginären Netzwerke aus der Zeit vor dem Internet schließen die in der Ausstellung gezeigten Arbeiten und Projekte die Lücke zwischen der Zeit vor und nach dem Internet. Mit Blick auf den Netzwerk-Backlash überprüft The Eternal Network das Vermächtnis kritischer Netzkulturen, um herauszufinden, ob und wie diese auch in Zukunft noch eine emanzipatorische Bedeutung haben werden.
