The influence of affect in culture, politics, and society has become more and more apparent in recent years: Against this background transmediale 2019 (https://2019.transmediale.de/theme) focused on experimenting with new methodologies and formats. Together with the audience, a dynamic, living cultural experience was created in order to critically reflect on the language and structure of cultural events.

The result was a festival edition that emphasized dialogue and participation: Those who ventured deep into the program were comprehensively involved in an examination of the structures, technologies, and politics of feeling that define our current time.

We have launched two open issues of the transmediale/journal (https://transmediale.de/journal) on the topics of the Study Circles Affective Infrastructures (https://2019.transmediale.de/content/study-circle-affective-infrastructures) and Uneasy Alliances (https://2019.transmediale.de/content/study-circle-uneasy-alliances) : Over the coming months, we are going to publish in-depth content on aspects of this year’s festival in order to explore it further. These include essays, interviews, conversations, and audio pieces by Jennifer Bennett, Lou Cornum, Pedro Oliveira, Jara Rocha, and Robin Vanbesien.

Connecting to the themes of next year’s transmediale, the Vilém Flusser Residency 2019 has started: We are looking forward to accompany Luiza Prado de O. Martins’ project that was selected by the jury. During the residency she will start to convene the “Councils of the Pluriversal”—a series of meetings with activists, artists, elders, and thinkers hailing from marginalized groups in Northern nations and the Global South, to discuss the entanglements of climate change, reproduction, ancestral and future histories, land and belonging, and radical forms of care. transmediale 2020 will be the last edition under the artistic direction of Kristoffer Gansing who is going to leave transmediale after nine great years. We are excited to announce Dr. Nora O Murchú as the new artistic director: Commencing the role from the 2021 edition, O Murchú will be the festival’s fifth artistic director and the first woman to take this position in its 33-year history. In-Between Festivals, Looking Ahead

Der Einfluss von Affekt in Kultur, Politik und Gesellschaft ist in den letzten Jahren immer offensichtlicher geworden: Vor diesem Hintergrund stand bei der transmediale 2019 (https://2019.transmediale.de/de/theme) das Experimentieren mit neuen Methodologien und Formaten im Mittelpunkt. Gemeinsam mit dem Publikum wurde eine dynamische und lebendige kulturelle Erfahrung gestaltet  und damit die Sprache und Struktur kultureller Veranstaltungen kritisch reflektiert.

Das Ergebnis war eine Festivalausgabe, die Dialog und Partizipation in den Vordergrund stellte: Diejenigen, die sich tief ins Programm wagten, wurden umfassend in eine Auseinandersetzung mit den Strukturen, Technologien und Gefühlspolitiken einbezogen, die unsere heutige Zeit bestimmen.

Lest, wie diese Auseinandersetzung auch nach dem Festival fortgeführt wird, was sich in Bezug auf die transmediale 2020 – die letzte Ausgabe unter Kristoffer Gansings künstlerischer Leitung – abzeichnet und was die Zukunft bringt.

Martins zu begleiten, für das sie eine Reihe von Veranstaltungen mit Mitgliedern marginalisierter Gruppen aus nördlichen Nationen und dem globalen Süden einberuft, um Verschränkungen zwischen Klimawandel, Reproduktion, Abstammungs- und Zukunftsgeschichten, Land und Zugehörigkeit sowie radikalen Formen der Fürsorge zu diskutieren. Die transmediale 2020 wird die letzte Ausgabe unseres derzeitigen künstlerischen Leiters Kristoffer Gansing sein, der die transmediale nach neun großartigen Jahren verlässt. Wir freuen uns bekanntzugeben, dass Dr. Nora O Murchú ab der Festivalausgabe 2021 die künstlerische Leitung der transmediale übernehmen wird. Als fünfte Leitung in der 33-jährigen Geschichte des Festivals wird sie die erste Frau in dieser Position sein.
