Participatory formats, educational approaches, and exchange—of experiences, knowledge, ideas. What began with transmediale/conversationpiece (https://transmediale.de/archive/history/festival/2016) and the Co-curricular Program (https://transmediale.de/content/transmediale-co-curricular-1) in 2016, continues with next year’s edition: With transmediale 2019 we are redefining the festival through a focus on live practices and the creation of a learning environments. The newly adopted format of the Study Circles was already launched in October 2018, opening up and extending the process of knowledge production beyond the limited time frame of the festival. Organized around the thematic strands Affective Infrastructures (https://2019.transmediale.de/content/study-circle-affective-infrastructures) and Uneasy Alliances (https://2019.transmediale.de/content/study-circle-uneasy-alliances) , artists, researchers, and activists come together in working groups and take part in shaping the core program

What role do emotions, empathy, and cultural emergence play in digital culture? This question sets the scene for transmediale (https://2019.transmediale.de/theme) 2019 (https://2019.transmediale.de/theme) , which will also look into the way affect becomes mobilized as a political force today. On our website you can find our different pass and ticket options (https://2019.transmediale.de/visit) , a list of confirmed participants and a program overview (https://2019.transmediale.de/program) to get an impression of next year’s keynotes, performances, films, and the new format of the Student Forum.

The working process of the transmediale Study Circles has already kicked off with first events and working meetings of their participants; it is realized in association with the project spaces TIER.space, Spektrum, and Import Projects in Berlin, who will also present their own program on the respective themes parallel to the festival. An accompanying documentation will soon be published online in the form of two new issues in the transmediale/journal (https://transmediale.de/journal) —through introductory conversations, references, reading recommendations and first articles you can learn more about the questions and reflections coming up in the Study Circles.

We are also striking out in a new direction with our communication, as we stopped actively using Facebook in October. Facebook has always been a platform whose technological architecture and business model contradicted our support of distributed communication forms, privacy, and artistic media production—and we think that transmediale should also be part of the demand for better and more diverse platforms. Further big changes are taking place within the organisation: Our artistic director Kristoffer Gansing has announced that he will leave transmediale after the next two festival editions. Having successfully directed transmediale for nine years, 2020 will be the final edition under his direction. A call for a new artistic director (https://transmediale.de/content/announcement-artistic-director) to succeed Kristoffer Gansing has been published; applications are still possible until 6 January 2019.

And, finally, some glitter and gold: We are happy to announce that we have signed the Declaration of The Many together with more than 200 other signatories. Initiated by DIE VIELEN, the declaration (https://transmediale.de/content/the-declaration-of-the-many) is an expression of solidarity in art and culture as part of civil society's engagement against right-wing populist and nationalist movements. We are many—every single one of us.

Partizipatorische Formate, edukative Ansätze und Austausch – von Erfahrungen, Wissen und Ideen. Was mit transmediale/conversationpiece (https://transmediale.de/de/archive/history/festival/2016)  und dem Co-Curricular-Programm (https://transmediale.de/de/content/transmediale-co-curricular-0) 2016 begann, setzt sich im kommenden Jahr fort: Mit der transmediale 2019 definieren wir das Festival durch einen Fokus auf Live-Praktiken und die Schaffung von Lernumgebungen neu. Das neu adaptierte Format der Study Circles wurde bereits im Oktober 2018 eingeführt und verlängert den Prozess der Wissensproduktion über den begrenzten Zeitraum des Festivals hinaus. In Arbeitsgruppen kommen Künstler*innen, Wissenschaftler*innen und Aktivist*innen zusammen, um das Festivalprogramm um die beiden Themenkomplexe Affective Infrastructures (https://2019.transmediale.de/de/content/study-circle-affective-infrastru...) und Uneasy Alliances (https://2019.transmediale.de/de/content/study-circle-uneasy-alliances)

Welche Rolle spielen Emotionen, Empathie und kulturelle Emergenz in der digitalen Kultur? Diese Frage steckt den thematischen Rahmen der

transmediale 2019 (https://2019.transmediale.de/de/theme) ab, welche auch die Art und Weise in den Blick nehmen wird, wie Affekt heute als politische Kraft instrumentalisiert wird. Auf der Website der transmediale findet ihr neben unterschiedlichen Pass- und Ticket-Optionen (https://2019.transmediale.de/de/visit) , einer Liste bestätigter Teilnehmer*innen auch eine Programmübersicht (https://2019.transmediale.de/de/program) , mit der ihr einen ersten Eindruck von Keynotes, Performances, Filmen und dem neuen Format des transmediale Student Forums gewinnen könnt.

Der Arbeitsprozess der transmediale Study Circles ist bereits mit ersten Veranstaltungen und Arbeitstreffen der Teilnehmer*innen gestartet; er wird im Austausch mit den Berliner Projekträumen TIER.space, Spektrum und Import Projects realisiert, die außerdem parallel zum Festival ihr eigenes Programm zu den Themen der Study Circles kuratieren. Eine begleitende Dokumentation wird schon bald online in Form zwei neuer Ausgaben im transmediale/journal (https://transmediale.de/de/journal) veröffentlicht – durch einführende Konversationen, Referenzen, Leseempfehlungen und erste Artikel könnt ihr mehr über die Fragestellungen und Reflexionen der Study Circles erfahren.

Auch aus dem Bereich der Kommunikation gibt es Neues: Im Oktober haben wir die aktive Nutzung unserer Facebook-Seite eingestellt. Facebook war schon immer eine Plattform, deren Geschäftsmodell und technologische Architektur unserer Befürwortung von dezentralen Kommunikationsformen, Datenschutz und künstlerischer Medienproduktion widersprochen haben – und wir sind der Meinung, dass die transmediale die Forderungen nach besseren und vielfältigeren Plattformen unterstützen sollte. Es zeichnen sich darüber hinaus weitere große Veränderungen ab: So hat unser künstlerischer Leiter Kristoffer Gansing angekündigt, dass er die transmediale nach den beiden kommenden Festivalausgaben verlassen wird. Nach neun erfolgreichen Jahren wird 2020 die letzte Ausgabe unter seiner Leitung sein. Eine Ausschreibung (https://transmediale.de/de/content/ausschreibung-kuenstlerische-leitung) für eine neue Künstlerische Leitung wurde bereits veröffentlicht; Bewerbungen sind noch bis zum 6. Januar 2019 möglich.

Und zum Schluss noch etwas Gold und Glitzer: Wir freuen uns zu verkünden, dass wir gemeinsam mit mehr als 200 anderen Unterzeichner*innen die Erklärung der Vielen unterzeichnet haben. Die von DIE VIELEN initiierte Erklärung (https://transmediale.de/de/content/die-erkl-rung-der-vielen) ist ein Ausdruck des Zusammenhalts in Kunst und Kultur als Teil des zivilgesellschaftlichen Engagements gegen rechtspopulistische sowie völkisch-nationale Strömungen. Wir sind viele – jede*r Einzelne von uns.
