Vorspiel continues, CTM launches,
and transmediale’s opening approaches

Still Be Here with Hatsune Miku, initiated by Mari Matsutoya in collaboration with Laurel Halo, Darren Johnston, LaTurbo Avedon, and Martin Sulzer Now entering the second week of the pre-festival program Vorspiel, the roster of screenings, performances, and workshops will continue up to the eventful transmediale launch at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt on 3 February. The full transmediale schedule from 3-7 February can be explored and bookmarked online. CTM Festival also launches its program on 29 January, including collaborative events.

Still Be Here with Hatsune Miku, initiated by Mari Matsutoya in collaboration with Laurel Halo, Darren Johnston, LaTurbo Avedon, and Martin Sulzer The annual transmediale Marshall McLuhan Projects organized with the Embassy of Canada in Berlin and its Marshall McLuhan Salon immediately precede transmediale. This year the transmediale Marshall McLuhan Lecture with the title Anxious to See Change... will be delivered by the pioneering media artist, curator, and researcher Sara Diamond. The transmediale Marshall McLuhan Projects are a cooperation between transmediale and the Embassy of Canada in Berlin.

Still Be Here explores the figure of Hatsune Miku as the crystallization of collective desires, embodied in the form of a teal-haired virtual idol, forever 16. The performance draws us into the multiplying realities of a 21st Century pop star, and traces the dynamics at play between fans, corporations, and social desires. Watch the new trailer here.

Auditorium Performance with FM Einheit on Sunday

FM Einheit will open his sound archive of the 1980s in Berlin: original sounds from the May First festivities in Kreuzberg, the clattering of Heiner Müller's typewriter in his flat in East Berlin, the noises from railway and subway stations, and various sound machines are the starting point for new compositions in the open sound lab on the auditorium stage.

Registration-only Events

transmediale/conversationpiece: 3-7 February 2016, HKW

This year’s transmediale features a range of registration-only events. The workshops, talks, and performances follow the thematic streams of the Conversation Piece topic and explore its dimensions in aesthetic, sensory, and discursive ways.

The workshop Affection Systems with Brody Condon and Nina Runa Essendrop aims to examine the simulation of intimacy, facilitated by the immaterial presence of a fictional AI. In Tele_Trust, Eric Kluitenberg and Lancel/Maat will question parameters for online trust, while participants can try out the wearable DataVeil, a tangible body interface functioning as a second skin and membrane for “scanning” online trust. Alfredo Aracil, Lucia Arias & David Pello from media art center LABoral will meet Jussi Ängeslevä and Iohanna Nicenboim in Crafting New Methods for Learning and Collaboration and focus on prototyping and maker practices as a means for learning and collaboration. In the lecture-performance The Gigantic Jelly-Blob, the viewer is invited to shape an immaterial sculpture together with one of the 2015 Vilém Flusser residents, Valentina Karga, thus creating space for communication, togetherness, and embodiment of ideas. Vorspiel 2016

Vorspiel program until 7 February 2016

The second week of Vorspiel has just started. Until 7 February, transmediale and CTM Festival’s partner venues in Berlin will offer further exhibitions, workshops, performances, installations, and sound interventions.

Before speculative architect Liam Young presents a live cinema performance of Where the City Can’t See at the transmediale opening, his dystopian cityscapes will be screened at Public Art Lab’s Urban Media Gallery (26-28 January, 19:00-22:00) and CHB - Collegium Hungaricum Berlin (2-7 February, 19:00-22:00) as a part of the Vorspiel program.

On 29 January, transmediale 2016 participant and visual artist Alona Rodeh will show a new time-based piece, embedded in the architecture of the Vesselroom Project space. In the last two and a half years, under the meta-title Safe and Sound, she has been pursuing the visual and sonar expressions of safety in the city. For her solo show during the Vorspiel program, the emphasis will be placed on the physical effect of light on sight and the body.

Among the Vorspiel events is also a live performance by audio-visual improvisation collective RecPlay at SPEKTRUM | art science community on 2 February. Two days later, RecPlay will present a non-verbal dialog with the architecture and the acoustic space of the Café Stage at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt for transmediale 2016.

Gerade beginnt die zweite Woche des Vorfestivalprogramms Vorspiel. Die Zusammenstellung von Screenings, Performances und Workshops geht über die veranstaltungsreiche Eröffnung der transmediale im Haus der Kulturen der Welt am 3. Februar hinaus weiter. Das vollständige transmediale-Programm vom 3.-7. Februar kann online erkundet und mit Bookmarks sortiert werden. Das Programm des CTM Festivals, zu dem auch kollaborative Veranstaltungen gehören, startet am 29. Januar.

Unmittelbar vor der transmediale finden auch die jährlich gemeinsam mit der Botschaft von Kanada in Berlin und ihrem Marshall McLuhan Salon veranstalteten transmediale Marshall McLuhan Projects statt. Die transmediale Marshall McLuhan Lecture mit dem Titel Anxious to See Change... wird in diesem Jahr von der kanadischen Medienkünstlerin, Kuratorin und Wissenschaftlerin Sara Diamond gehalten. Die transmediale Marshall McLuhan Projects sind eine Zusammenarbeit von transmediale und der Botschaft von Kanada in Berlin.

Still Be Here erforscht Hatsune Miku als Kristallisation kollektiven Verlangens, verkörpert durch ein virtuelles Idol mit türkisfarbenen Haaren, das für immer 16 Jahre alt bleibt. Die Performance lenkt den Blick auf die sich multiplizierenden Realitäten um Popstars des 21. Jahrhunderts und spürt Dynamiken nach, die sich zwischen Fans, Unternehmen und gesellschaftlichen Sehnsüchten entwickeln. Trailer ansehen.

Bei der transmediale öffnet FM Einheit sein Ton-Archiv der 80er Jahre in Berlin: O-Töne der Kreuzberger Maifestspiele, das Klappern von Heiner Müllers Schreibmaschine in seiner Ostberliner Wohnung, O-Töne von S- und U-Bahnhöfen und diverse Klangmaschinen werden in dem offenen Klanglabor auf der Bühne des Auditoriums zum Ausgangspunkt neuer Kompositionen.

Veranstaltungen mit Registrierung

Teil der diesjährigen transmediale sind eine Reihe von Veranstaltungen, die nur nach vorheriger Registrierung besucht werden können. Die Workshops, Talks, und Performances folgen den thematischen Streams des Conversation Piece und untersuchen in ästhetischer, sensorischer und diskursiver Weise seine unterschiedlichen Dimensionen.

Der Workshop Affection Systems mit Brody Condon und Nina Runa Essendrop zielt darauf ab, unterstützt von der immateriellen Präsenz einer fiktionalen KI die Simulation von Intimität zu untersuchen. In Tele_Trust werden Eric Kluitenberg und Lancel/Maat die Parameter für Vertrauen im Netz hinterfragen, während Teilnehmer_innen in einem materiellen Körper-Interface, dem DataVeil, aufeinandertreffen, das als zweite Haut und Membran Online-Vertrauen „scannt“. Alfredo Aracil, Lucia Arias & David Pello vom Medienkunstzentrum LABoral treffen in Crafting New Methods for Learning and Collaboration auf Jussi Ängeslevä und Iohanna Nicenboim, um sich mit Prototyping und Maker-Praktiken als Mittel zum Lernen und zur Zusammenarbeit auseinanderzusetzen. Der performative Vortrag The Gigantic Jelly-Blob lädt die Zuschauer_innen dazu ein, gemeinsam mit einem der beiden Vilém Flusser-Residents 2015, Valentina Karga, eine immaterielle Skulptur zu formen – und so einen Raum für Kommunikation, Gemeinschaft und die Verkörperung von Ideen zu schaffen.

Vorspiel 2016

Vorspiel-Programm noch bis zum 7. Februar 2016

Die zweite Woche des Vorspiels hat gerade begonnen. Bis zum 7. Februar bieten Partner-Veranstaltungsorte von transmediale und dem CTM Festival weitere Ausstellungen, Workshops, Performances, Installationen und Sound-Interventionen.

Bevor der spekulative Architekt Liam Young eine Live-Performance von Where the City Can’t See bei der transmediale-Eröffnung präsentiert, werden seine dystopischen Stadtlandschaften in der Urban Media Gallery des Public Art Lab (26.-28. Januar, 19:00-22:00) und im CHB - Collegium Hungaricum Berlin (2.-7. Februar, 19:00-22:00) als Teil des Vorspiel-Programms gezeigt.

Am 29. Januar stellt Künstlerin und transmediale 2016-Teilnehmerin Alona Rodeh eine neue zeitbasierte Arbeit vor, die in die Architektur des Vesselroom Project Space integriert wird. Unter dem Meta-Titel Safe and Sound hat sich Rodeh in den letzten zweieinhalb Jahren mit visuellen und akustischen Ausdrucksformen von Sicherheit in der Stadt beschäftigt. Während ihrer Solo-Show im Rahmen des Vorspiel-Programms wird der Fokus auf den physischen Effekten von Licht auf Körper und Sehen liegen.

Unter den Vorspiel-Events ist auch eine Live-Performance des audiovisuellen Improvisationskollektivs RecPlay bei SPEKTRUM | art science community am 2. Februar. Zwei Tage später präsentiert RecPlay einen nonverbalen Dialog mit der Architektur und dem akustischen Raum der Café Stage im Haus der Kulturen der Welt für die transmediale 2016.
