Dear friends,

after an exciting summer of partner events in Berlin and around the globe the transmediale.11 team is set and ready to dive into the festival prep season!

Together with our Upgrade! and Skulpturenpark Berlin-Zentrum partners we had a great 'Midsummers Night Art Exiles BBQ' featuring guest artists and curators Somaya Langley, Philip Pocock and Daniel Massey where the first public debates surrounding the next festival's theme 'RESPONSE:ABILITY' began to take shape. In collaboration with the ASEF and Common Room transmediale hosted an experts meeting in Bandung Indonesia on the role played by media art and culture centres on guarateeing freedom of expression, resulting in the 'Bandung Declaration of Open Cultures, Technologies and Ecologies', while in Beijing transmediale and the Goethe Institute opened 'Stadt am Rande', a special exhibition featuring Berlin-based urban interventionist art work, curated by Melanie Zagrean and Pierre Wolters from Art-Claims-Impulse. And just hot off the press ... the second edition of the transmediale book sprint project 'Collaborative Futures', hosted by Eyebeam New York has been finished and is ready to buy, download, copy ... or further edit!

In the coming days the transmediale juries will begin their work on the festival's three prizes - the transmediale Award, the Vilém Flusser Theory Award and the new Open Web Award, which we are delighted to have been able to develop together with Mozilla / Drumbeat. The nominees will be announced shortly, so please stay tuned for this ... and follow us here, on facebook or on twitter for the continued development of the festival programme. Mit dem Titel RESPONSE:ABILITY widmet sich die transmediale.11 ganz der heutigen LIVE geschalteten Gesellschaft, welche die Intensivierung und Verdichtung der Kommunikation, die Möglichkeit zur nonstop Interaktivität und letztlich auch die Live-Streams nutzt, um in dieser medialen Welt zu existieren. Wir leben im Strom des ständigen, gleichzeitigen Informationsaustausches und verfolgen die Welt über Livestreams mit.

Welche Auswirkungen hat die umfassende Vergleichzeitigung sämtlicher Bereiche unserer Lebens- und Alltagswelt? Welche Reaktionen und Antworten entstehen darauf? Und welche Handlungsstrategien, bzw. gesellschaftliche Positionen bringt diese neue Live-Kultur hervor?

Das Wort "Live" ist uns vor allem als technischer Begriff bekannt, der zunächst im Zusammenhang mit dem Radio verwendet wurde - als eine Direktübertragung in Echtzeit. Heute erleben wir erneut einen Wendepunkt, an dem die Liveschaltung der Welt zu einer grundlegenden kulturellen Kondition geworden ist. Es geht nicht mehr nur um das "Miterleben", sondern auch um das "Mitgestalten".

RESPONSE:ABILITY ist die neue soziale Metapher der live geschalteten Gesellschaft: die Fähigkeit im konstanten Strom der Ereignisse handlungsfähig zu bleiben und selbstverantwortend agieren zu können. RESPONSE:ABILITY ist auch eine Reflektion über das Netz als zunehmend politischer Ort: von Statuspromotern und Prosumern der Web 2.0-Ära wird mehr und mehr eine Haltung erwartet. Das Internet hat den cyber-realen Raum längst überwunden und ist zur gesellschaftlichen Handlungszone geworden. Das Open Web, früher eine Art Systemvoraussetzung, wird langsam zur umkämpften Ressource.

Das Netz ist hier und jetzt, es ist live. Andere haben es für uns gebaut – gestalten müssen wir es jetzt selbst.

Workshop Reihe: Free Culture Incubator

Free Culture Incubator Workshop-Serie - es geht weiter!

Nach dem erfolgreichen Start des Workshop-Programms während der transmediale.10 wird der Free Culture Incubator nun im Rahmen einer 12-monatigen Workshopserie mit verschiedenen Partner-Organisationen in ganz Berlin fortgesetzt. Diese Workshops behandeln ein breites Spektrum rund um Themen wie das Offene Web, Open Source Technologien und neue Methoden der Zusammenarbeit und Bildung.

Einen Start-Termin gibt es auch schon: Am Samstag, den 23. Oktober 2010 wird Sourcefabric im Rahmen des ON2 Festival “Test Signals” im Haus der Kulturen der Welt freien Journalisten, Medienaktivisten und Open Source Enthusiasten zeigen, wie man eine eigene Radiostation aufbaut bzw. welche Broadcasting-Technologien für eine Verbreitung von Sendeinhalten zur Verfügung stehen.

Verkündung der Nominierten des transmediale und des Open Web Award 2011

Diese Woche finden die Jurysitzungen für den transmediale Award und den Open Web Award 2011 in Berlin statt! Wir laden Euch recht herzlich zur öffentlichen Verkündung der Nominierten am Samstag, den 25. September 2010, um 17.00 Uhr in den Podewil Palais, Klosterstr. 68, Berlin-Mitte ein (U2 Klosterstraße).

Die Jurymitglieder Defne Ayas (Shanghai), Brandon LaBelle (Berlin), Thomas Macho (Berlin), Marisa Olson (New York) und Matteo Pasquinelli (Amsterdam) werden die Arbeiten der Nominierten vorstellen und stehen für Fragen und Feedback zur Verfügung. Seid dabei, um zusammen mit dem transmediale.11 Team auf die Nominierten anzustoßen und den Kick-Off des Themas der nächsten transmediale zu feiern!

Theme of transmediale.11

In our post-future era of acceleration and densification of information, the state and nature of being live and online becomes one of the crucial definers of our social presence. Response and action are compressed into an existential here and now triggering a durée of continuous digital stimulation.

With RESPONSE:ABILITY transmediale.11 explores the emerging qualities of liveness as a fundamental nature of our present digital culture and discusses the abilities, that are required to respond to social, political and economic processes triggered by the intensity of our participation and interaction.

RESPONSE:ABILITY is also a call to action - to seize and transform the moment of our own individual liveness within the cacophony of communications density. The resultant convergence of media, interfaces and accelerated data flows being increasingly merged into mega-infrastructures with little oversight risks turning the greatest republic on earth - the internet - into an empire of control and freedoms lost. The abilities required to respond, to enact and steer collaborative energies become the new means to co-opt the tools and systems of our live culture - and use these to create new forms of societal interaction, communication and mobility. How do such systems act to enable new forms of liveness, entrench the assertiveness of individual thought and expression, and ultimately move toward the forms of open structures and flows that visionaries such as Marshall McLuhan and later the pioneers of the early internet envisaged? In an equally open competition for resources, attention and sensory stimulation the ability to fuse the desire for digital emancipation with the necessity to act is our task.

The net we operate in is itself a living entity, built by others. Now it is up to the power of our response:ability to put it to use!

Workshop series: Free Culture Incubator

Free Culture Incubator workshop series - ready to start!

Based on the successful workshop-program during transmediale.10, the Free Culture Incubator will continue with a 12-months workshop series which will be hosted by 12 partner organizations all over Berlin. These workshops are designed for freelance cultural & creative workers, presenting a broad range of topics around free culture and creative work, open source technologies and methods of collaboration & education.

At our first workshop on Saturday, 23 October 2010, Sourcefabric will show how independent journalists, media activists and open source enthusiasts can set up their own radio station, and which ways there are to organize and broadcast open media content. This workshop will be presented as part of the ON2 Festival "Test Signals" at the House of World Cultures.
