For the upcoming edition of 2017, transmediale and CTM festival will again cooperate with the Berlin network of project spaces, galleries, independent cultural actors, and cultural institutions.

“Maker culture” is not one thing. As Teresa Dillon describes in this reflection on the Anxious to Make stream she curated at transmediale 2016, the multitude of practices that make up the world of making are what make it impossible to summarize. The events of her stream focused on crossover and common ground as well as contradiction, rather than a “bottom line” answer to what it means to be a maker today.

In this jointly authored text, Anna-Sophie Springer and Etienne Turpin instantiate theoretical debates about precarity in situated examples from their research in Jakarta. Launching from the Anxious to Secure keynote discussion at conversationpiece, they hone in on the specifics of twinned economic marginalization and environmental devastation justified under the political rubric of “normalization,” finding that in many cases insecurity is not so far from erasure.

In diesem gemeinschaftlich verfassten Text instanziieren Anna-Sophie Springer und Etienne Turpin die theoretische Debatte über das Prekariat anhand von Beispielen ihrer Forschung in Jakarta. Ausgehend von der Anxious to Secure Keynote von transmediale/conversationpiece, greifen sie die Besonderheiten ökonomischer Marginalisierung und Umweltzerstörung auf, welche unter dem politischen Vorwand der “Normalisierung” gerechtfertigt werden und entdecken dabei, dass Verunsicherung und Auslöschung oftmals dicht beieinander liegen.

Florian Wüst über Hellmuth Costard und Jürgen Eberts Echtzeit Im Rahmen des Film- und Videoprogramms der transmediale/conversationpiece zeigte der Kurator Florian Wüst den experimentellen Spielfilm Echtzeit aus dem Jahre 1983. Die Regisseure Hellmuth Costard und Jürgen Ebert beschäftigen sich darin schon erstaunlich früh mit der Entwicklung der Computertechnologie und den damit verbundenen Veränderungen unserer Realitätswahrnehmung. Kontrovers diskutierte Themen wie Big Data, Datenschutz oder soziale Simulation, die in dieser Vermischung von Science-Fiction und Dokumentarfilm behandelt werden, sind heute nur noch wichtiger und dringlicher geworden.
